Jack Turner in his book, The Abstract Wild, mentions that pelicans soar while making clacking calls, a mile high above him when he is on top of the Grand Teton mountain. He thinks that pelicans do this for joy. He recounts Doug Peacock filming young grizzly bears pushing down underwater chunks of floating ice, then push them down again when they pop up. He writes that the bears are playing. Bald eagles catch salmon. Salmon have feasted on smaller fish in the seas. Eagle droppings and remnants of their fish dinners spread the nutrients around the forest. Bald eagles need tall trees to nest and roost.
Eagles, fish, forests, trees, streams, bountiful oceans-all interdependent.
